Sergio Vázquez Montes de Oca - DC4

I am Sergio Vázquez Montes de Oca, and I graduated in Computer Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). Later, I earned a Master’s in Data Science Methodology from the Barcelona School of Economics. After that, I worked for two years at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Institute, where I developed predictive models for immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) response in bladder cancer. Now, I am pursuing my PhD at the Institute of Tissue Medicine and Pathology in Bern under the supervision of Prof. Inti Zlobec and Dr. María Rodríguez Martínez. My PhD is part of the MIRACLE project, funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. My research focuses on developing interpretable deep learning models for analyzing multi-omics data, particularly in the context of cardiometabolic disease (CMD). I aim to build models that can identify important patterns in single-cell and spatial data, helping improve predictions and guide clinical decision-making. I’m also working on addressing challenges like model reliability and interpretability to make AI tools more robust and impactful in medicine.

Outside of research, I love outdoor sports, especially mountaineering and climbing. I’m also a big fan of video games and board games. I enjoy traveling to explore new cultures, and I have a passion for cooking, which I find to be a great way to unwind and be creative.
